Why ingredient pairing matters
Skincare products are not just moisturizer or serum: they are delivery systems for active ingredients. AHA (alpha hydroxy acid)
A water-soluble exfoliating acid, such as glycolic or lactic acid, that works on the skin's surface to loosen dead cells. Commonly found in drugstore toners and serums.
BHA (beta hydroxy acid)
An oil-soluble exfoliating acid, most commonly salicylic acid, that can penetrate into pores. Often used to address blackheads and acne-prone skin.
Retinol
A form of vitamin A that speeds cell turnover and is widely used to address uneven texture and fine lines. It requires a gradual introduction period because it can irritate skin at first.
Niacinamide
Vitamin B3 in topical form. It is used to address uneven skin tone, enlarged pore appearance, and excess oil production, and is generally well-tolerated across skin types.
Hyaluronic acid

Combinations that work well together
Some actives complement each other and can be used in the same routine, sometimes even layered in the same application.
- Niacinamide + hyaluronic acid. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) targets uneven tone and pore appearance, while hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin. They share a neutral-to-slightly-acidic pH range and do not compete. Both are well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin.
- Retinol + peptides. Retinol accelerates cell turnover, which can temporarily disrupt the skin barrier. Peptides support barrier repair and collagen structure. Using a peptide moisturizer after a retinol serum is a practical way to address the dryness retinol can cause.
- Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) + vitamin E + ferulic acid. These three are frequently combined in formulas for good reason. Vitamin E and ferulic acid stabilize L-ascorbic acid, which is prone to oxidation, and may extend its antioxidant activity. You will often find all three in a single product.
- AHA/BHA + hyaluronic acid. Exfoliating acids (such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid) can be drying when used alone. Applying a hyaluronic acid serum afterward helps restore moisture without blocking the acid's work.

Pairs that can cause irritation or reduce effectiveness
Some active combinations are worth separating, either by using them at different times of day or on alternating nights.

- Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) + AHAs/BHAs. L-ascorbic acid is most stable and effective at a pH below 3.5. Many AHA and BHA exfoliants sit in a similar low-pH range, so they do not cancel each other out chemically, but using both together can push skin into irritation, especially for sensitive types. A common approach is vitamin C in the morning and exfoliating acids at night.
- Retinol + AHAs/BHAs. Both are exfoliating agents. Layering them increases turnover rate beyond what most skin can tolerate, leading to redness, peeling, and a compromised barrier. Separate these onto different nights or use one consistently before introducing the other.
- Retinol + benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide can oxidize retinol, reducing its effectiveness. If both are part of your routine, use them on separate nights or in separate AM/PM slots.
- Niacinamide + high-concentration vitamin C. Older research suggested these two could interact to form a compound called nicotinic acid, which causes flushing. More recent formulation science indicates this is less of a concern at typical product concentrations and normal skin temperatures. That said, if you notice redness when using both, separating them by time of day is a low-effort fix.
